How Much Experience Is Needed For The HVAC Field?
It may surprise you to learn that you can start a career in HVAC with no prior experience; many of our team members had very different jobs before joining Logan Services. Learn about some of their backgrounds below:
Devin J., previously employed in nursing, has been with Logan Services for 7 months. He was trying to work third shift in the hospital and go to opportunities. “To me, a job in nursing was a lot of computer work and documenting and not so much one-on-one patient care; I couldn’t find what made me happy.” After investing his time and efforts into a nursing career, he found that it wasn’t the right fit for him. A new start in HVAC looked promising, and he enjoys the hands-on mechanical work and the ability he now has to help others with their home comfort.
Jared C. has been on the Logan Services installation team for over a year. He worked at Kroger for 15 years as a butcher when he decided to make a change and join the HVAC industry. His brother was a lead installer with Logan Services. Jared found an opportunity to come on and work with and learn from him to become an excellent HVAC Installer Assistant.
Matt A. has been working in the HVAC installation department at Logan Services for 9 months. Before he joined our team, he was employed in hotel management. When the pandemic, his role coordinating events took a hit, and his position’s stability and growth potential looked bleak. He was looking for job security, and he knew a career in the trades would prove just that.
Do You Need To Attend College/Trade School For A Career In HVAC?
Devin, Jared, and Matt all said that they felt as though college NEEDED to be the next step in their life when they were in high school. The truth of the matter is that college isn’t in everyone’s plans, and maybe that’s because of financial reasons, or perhaps it’s just not the right fit for you.
You don’t need a college education for HVAC, and in fact, you don’t even need to go to trade school to enter into a fast-track career path at Logan Services. Heating and cooling installation careers are in high demand; if you are willing to learn, enjoy helping people and working with your hands, and are mechanically inclined, then this could be the perfect career for you.
What Advice Should Be Given To Someone Coming Into The Heating/Cooling Field?
If you haven’t found the inspiration yet from hearing from these guy’s stories, then consider the advice they share in the podcast for someone interested in exploring a career in HVAC.
Devin’s advice is “Just do it. Have your eyes open to opportunities and just listen to all the different paths a career in trades can provide. Be open to everything if you can, talk to people and ask what they do daily and not just what they bring home.”
Jared’s advice was to get an early start; he wishes he would’ve started much earlier in an HVAC career. He said, “Consider it, there is a huge deficit in workers for all trades, HVAC especially. If you are willing to work hard, learn, and keep your mind open to new ideas, then you’re going to make it.”
Matt’s advice was to consider the trades and give it a second look. He said, “When growing up, skilled trades were looked down upon at my school. They said you have to go to college, and all these different careers were pushed at you. I would definitely recommend taking a second look at a career in trades because they pay the same if not more than some of those jobs that you go to a 4-years school for.”
How Can Logan Services Help In Your Career Path?
Logan Services has a process to help you become part of our team and find your path in HVAC. If interested, you can contact our team for a job shadow with our field team to see firsthand what a ‘day in the life of HVAC‘ looks like. Our team also schedules ride-alongs with the installers so that new hires can see what it’s like daily and see what they will be learning. We also provide an apprenticeship program that helps our installer assistants work on a set timeline to become lead installers. The apprenticeship program is taught in our training center by Logan Services team members.
Devin had a great experience with both the ride-along and the apprenticeship program. He told us, “When I saw the ride-along, I thought it was a good idea just so I can see firsthand. I went on three ride-alongs; I enjoyed it and stuck with it since. I apprenticed with Logan Services, and it takes about 8 to 16 months depending on the person and how quickly you can progress and pick it up.”
Jared said, “I really love the work that I do here at Logan Services. My brother brought me on and taught me everything that I know. I spent a year with him training, learning from beginning to end at the training center here.”
Matt shared his experience with the Logan Services training process, saying, “I did the ride-along, and I had a really good time. I worked with Treneil and Brad; they really inspired me to get into the field. When I got hired, I went through working with three lead installers; they got me in the apprenticeship program, and I’ve been crushing it ever since. Right around June, I think I’ll be ready to be promoted to a lead installer. It just depends on how fast I keep training and learning.”
