Homeowners in the Dayton, Columbus and Cincinnati areas will often ask us…
Should I replace my furnace and air conditioner at the same time?
If you are buying a new air conditioner, you should also consider replacing the furnace too. Watch below as one of our experts provides some reasons as to why we recommend replacing your furnace and air conditioner at the same time and things to consider along the way.
HVAC System Compatibility
While your air conditioner and furnace are completely different units and typically function at different times of the year, they do use the same components (such as the blower inside of the furnace) that you may not realize. A new air conditioner, with new technology, may not communicate properly with an old furnace with outdated technology. In many cases, a furnace that is old (15+ years) will not even be compatible to operate with a new air conditioner. A mismatched system (mixing old technology with new) can decrease system performance and comfort. It is recommended to replace both systems at once to maintain maximum efficiency and longevity.
Money Saved On HVAC Installation
When replacing the furnace and A/C at the same time instead of separately you will save money. Installing the entire HVAC system together is more economical rather than replacing just one part and realizing that the new equipment won’t work well with the old equipment. Replacing your heating and cooling system also means savings in the long run, you won’t have to spend money on countless repairs for an older system that keeps breaking down.
Warranty Issues
If you decide to replace one part of the system, the air conditioner for example, and pair it with a 15-year-old furnace you might experience warranty issues. The blower motor for the furnace will try and keep up with the new technology of the air conditioner and can possibly overwork and break down. Warranty issues for repair may arise due to age of the system because one piece has been replaced and the other hasn’t.
Heating/Cooling System Age and Condition
The age and condition of your furnace and air conditioner are important factors. If either is giving you problems frequently or is 10 years or older, it might be time to consider replacement options. If both of your HVAC units are old or breaking down often it makes sense to replace both furnace and air conditioner.
Time Saved On HVAC Replacement
Why go through the process of deciding on an air conditioner, filling out paperwork, having it installed, just to turn around in 6 months to replace your furnace? You can save yourself a lot of time and energy by just replacing both at the same time. In many cases, you can get your furnace and air conditioner installed in one day!
For the benefit of our customers, we like to explain why it is important to consider the replacement of both systems when it is time to make the upgrade on your heating or cooling equipment.
