With warmer weather settling in our region in the upcoming weeks, we will be starting to turn on our air conditioners. Unfortunately, because many of us haven’t had our A/Cs on in a while, unanticipated issues or even breakdowns could be looming when we turn them on for the first time.
When you think about the possible issues and how they have occurred, rodents might not be on that list. However, during the colder months, it’s not uncommon for rodents to take shelter and make a home in your outdoor air conditioning unit.
Watch our Senior Service Technician, Craig, as he takes on the task of cleaning a mouse nest out of an air conditioner and see the havoc that rodents can cause in your ac unit.
How Can Rodents Cause an AC Breakdown?
Rodents like mice and squirrels like to chew on the wires and the wire sheathing in the system. This chewing causes wires to become exposed to the elements or be left in pieces. These chewed and exposed wires can cause your outdoor unit to work incorrectly or cause a complete breakdown.
How Can You Prevent Rodents From Getting In Your AC?
It’s important to note that there is no way to guarantee rodent prevention from getting into your system and causing ac damage. Because air conditioners require airflow to operate, there are small openings that are necessary to allow that air to pass. While the air conditioning equipment is built to withstand the outdoor environment, there are some small rodents that will still find their way inside.
So what can you do to lessen the risk rodents getting into your ac system? You can try placing live traps around the system. That way, you can catch them before they have a chance of getting into your HVAC system. You can also place cinnamon, peppermint tea bags, mint toothpaste, or cayenne pepper around the bottom of the system to deter mice. If you think you have a bigger problem, call your local pest control company.
