Heat pumps are actually a versatile heating and air conditioning system in one. During winter, they extract latent heat from outdoor air or the ground and concentrate it to warm your home. This allows them to provide up to 3-4 times more energy than they consume! Ductless mini-split heat pumps are also very popular.
The best cold climate heat pumps now have very high efficiencies, making them cheaper to operate than electric resistance heating. Heat pumps also provide cooling in summer. However, output drops in extremely cold weather. Hybrid systems with a supplemental gas furnace may be an ideal solution.
